Kohokohdat / Highlights

Kahden kuukauden matkamme oli yhtä suurta kohokohtaa, mutta reittiä suunniteltiin erityisesti muutamien kohteiden perusteella. Tällä sivulla esittelimme ennen matkaa odottamamme kohokohdat jotka kaikki todellakin osoittautuivat vierailun arvoisiksi. Ne kohokohdat, jotka löysimme matkamme aikana, on mainittu blogipäivityksissämme. /// Our two-month travel was one big highlight but some of the places were significant in terms of planning the route. Grand Canyon

Käynti Grand Canyonilla kuului tämän matkan reittisuunnitelmaan alusta alkaen. Vaikka kumpikin oli käynyt Las Vegasissa aiemmin, ei kumpikaan ollut ehtinyt matkallaan Grand Canyonille asti.

Grand Canyon was an important part of the route plan from the beginning as neither of us had visited Grand Canyon earlier.

 

Highway 1

Tyynenmeren rantaviivaa pitkin matkustamisesta puhuu jokainen niin tehnyt silmät loistaen, joten odotukset olivat korkealla, ja ne myös toteutuivat.

We had heard so much good things about this coastal highway by the Pacific that we just had to include it to our plans. It certainly was a right decision!

 

San Francisco

Kaupunkikohteista San Francisco oli etukäteen ajateltuna kiinnostavin, eikä kumpikaan meistä ollut vielä siellä käynyt.

San Francisco was the most interesting urban area in the States beforehand, and neither of us had visited there earlier.

Yellowstone

Yellowstonen kansallispuisto oli reittimme pohjoisin vierailukohde, ja olimme ajatelleet telttailevamme Yellowstonessa sään salliessa pari päivää.

Yellowstone national park was the northest part of our trip and we had planned on camping there for a couple of days if the weather was good.

 

Roswell 

Roswellin tapaus on yksi tunnetuimmista UFO-kohteista maailmassa, joten mekin menimme tarkastamaan, löytyykö sieltä ET:tä.

A trip to the States wouldn't be complete without including a conspiracy theory in it so we're headed to Roswell to see if we can find ET.

 

Pittsburg

Pittsburg, Kansas ja tarkemmin Pitt State University, Mooreman's ja muut tutut paikat olivat ehdottomasti listalla, mihin oli mentävä tällaisella reissulla.

Death Valley

Oli odotettavissa, että Death Valley Mojaven aavikolla olisi varmasti yksi erilaisimmista ja mielenkiintoisimmista kohteista.

Death Valley and the Mojave desert was expected to be undoubtedly one of the most exotic and interesting places on the trip.

 

Liisan odottamat kohokohdat / Liisa's expected highlights

Madison Countyn katetut sillat / The covered bridges of Madison County

Meryl Streepin ja Clint Eastwoodin tähdittämä Francescan ja Robertin rakkaustarina Hiljaiset sillat (The Bridges of Madison County) on syy siihen, miksi reittimme kulki Iowan Wintersetin kautta. Valitettavasti emme päässeet paikalle 43. vuosittaisen Covered Bridge Festivalin aikaan lokakuussa, mutta toisaalta odotettavissa oli, että saisimme tutustua katettuihin siltoihin kaikessa rauhassa.

Madison Countyn 19 katetusta puusillasta on jäljellä enää kuusi, joista Cedar Covered Bridge on tuhopolton jälkeen rakennettu jäljennös alkuperäisestä ja Cutler-Donahoe Bridge on siirretty alkuperäiseltä paikaltaan. Tarkoituksenamme oli vierailla ainakin Roseman Bridgellä, Holliwell Bridgellä ja Cedar Covered Bridgellä. Lisäksi toiveissani oli käynti Northside Caféssa Wintersetin keskustassa, ehkäpä istuen samalla tuolilla kuin millä Clint Eastwood istui kahvilla Robert Kincaidin roolissa 90-luvun puolivälissä?

Starred by Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood, the love story of Francesca and Robert, The Bridges of Madison County, was the reason why we drove to Winterset in Iowa. Though we weren't there on 43th annual Covered Bridge Festival in October, we were waiting for having some peace and quiet instead, while sightseeing at least some of the six remaining covered bridges (click headline for more information). We were planning also to have a lunch at the Northside Cafe where Clint Eastwood had a cup of coffee in the role of Robert Kincaid in the middle of the 90's.

 

Cape Cod

Vaikka matka Cape Codiin tarkoitti useita satoja maileja "väärään suuntaan" alkumatkasta, uskoimme sen silti olevan ajamisen arvoista, ja niinhän se olikin.

Even though going to Cape Cod added a few hundred miles to our trip, we thought it certainly would be worth visiting, and it was.

 

Graceland 

Matkan loppupuolen Elvis- ja Johnny Cash -vierailukohteet olivat ylipäätään korkealla odotuksissa, ja ehkäpä niistä eniten odotin Gracelandilta - Nashvillessa toivottavasti nähtävää Elviksen kultaista Cadillacia yhtään vähättelemättä :)

Liisa was waiting eagerly to visit all of the Elvis and Johnny Cash locations, especially Graceland.
